Some Tottenham fans think Spurs have just snapped up 'Toby 2.0'

Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to welcome Charlie Sayers to the Spurs academy.

The north Londoners confirmed on Tuesday that the 17-year-old defender had joined their ranks.

Sayers arrives at the Tottenham setup from Southend for an undisclosed fee.

He joins the Spurs scholarship programme as a second-year Under-18s player.

Sayers has already featured for Southend’s senior team, making six National League appearances.

The teenager is a left-footed defender who can play at left-back and centre-back.

Sayers has been praised by current Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher as well as former manager Phil Brown.

“He broke into the team this season and to play at 17 in a really tough league shows a lot of character,” said the former.

“He’s got a mature head on him for his young age and hopefully he can take that forward.”

Meanwhile, Brown recently told Echo News: “I think Charlie Sayers has been outstanding.

“You have to say he has a career ahead of him, there’s no doubt about it.”

Here is what some Spurs fans have been saying about Sayers’ arrival at N17:

The Spurs academy has been in fine form in recent years.

Harry Kane is obviously the best-known graduate, then you have Oliver Skipp.

The likes of Dane Scarlett, Alfie Devine, Dilan Markanday and Nile John also look set for success.

Sayers is therefore at the right place to kick on and progress as a footballer.
