Some Sunderland fans thought 19-year-old was 'unbelievable' v Lincoln

A number of Sunderland fans have waxed lyrical about Dan Neil following his impressive Papa John’s Trophy display on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old, who made his Black Cats debut in 2018-19, has become a first-team regular side this term, with nine League One appearances so far.

Lee Johnson handed Neil the captain’s armband for Sunderland’s meeting with Lincoln, and he repaid the manager with an incredible performance.

The teenager broke the deadlock for the Black Cats after just two minutes with a half-volley into the top right-hand corner from 25 yards out.

Neil then provided the cross for Stephen Wearne to get Sunderland’s second and overall had too much quality for the Imps to deal with.

Lewis Montsma pulled a goal back for the hosts in second-half injury time, but Sunderland were worthy winners.

Neil was by far the standout on the pitch on the night, with Johnson describing him as “top, top drawer” after the game.

“It’s an art form the way he moves around the pitch and I’m so happy to be working with him and to be able to continue watching his development,” he added.

Sunderland fans were delighted with Neil’s display and took to Twitter to laud his efforts on the night:
