A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been giving their thoughts on Jose Mourinho’s purported decision not to let Japhet Tanganga leave Spurs on loan in the January window.

According to The Athletic, the Tottenham academy graduate was on the radar of Premier League duo Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, plus Scottish outfit Celtic.

However, Mourinho did not allow Tanganga to leave ahead of the January transfer window shutting, added the report.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a great breakthrough season with Tottenham last term.

He made his debut in the League Cup defeat to Colchester before starring against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Mourinho is a big fan, having described his league debut against the Reds as “fantastic” and saying he did “amazingly”.

Tanganga finished the season with 11 competitive senior appearances, and it was hoped he could kick on in 2020-21.

Sadly, injuries have hampered his progress, and he has just seven appearances under his belt this season, with none in the league.

At the same time, Spurs’ defence has been shaky in recent weeks, both centrally and on the flanks.

You’d think there’s a good chance Tanganga could be called upon, either to replace an underperforming player or just to cover for injury, illness or fatigue.

Therefore, it makes sense as to why Mourinho wouldn’t have wanted him to go.
