A number of Spurs fans have lauded Bryan Gil after the Tottenham newcomer captained Spain’s Under-21s to victory last night.

Gil and his compatriots ran out 4-1 winners over Russia in their Under-21 Championship qualifying clash in Almendralejo.

The Spurs ace’s nation didn’t get off to the best start, however, as Russia opened the scoring on 10 minutes through Gamid Agalarov.

Spain didn’t need long to get back on level terms though, as Fernando Nino equalised three minutes later.

Gil gave the opposition defence a hard time in the first half, often linking up superbly with left-back Juan Miranda.

Both sides remained level going into the break, but Spain went ahead soon after the restart, and Gil provided the assist.

The Tottenham gem drove up the left flank and set up Yeremi Pino, who fired home a low effort from range.

Fer Nino then scored in the 54th minute to give Spain a good cushion, and Pino added a fourth on 85 minutes.

Gil came off in the 79th minute with some “physical discomfort” (MD) – he was down at one point, but was up and walking eventually.

However, Spain U21s coach Luis de la Fuente said after the game that Gil was “fine”, just tired.
