Some Rangers fans want to see the back of Umar Sadiq after cup exit

Rangers are out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage following a 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen. Lewis Ferguson’s header in the 79th minute proved enough to book a final meeting against Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic in December.

Steven Gerrard’s side will no doubt feel they have missed a huge opportunity for a chance at silverware.

Despite dominating the ball, Rangers simply could not turn their dominance in possession into regular scoring opportunities and plenty of fans turned the blame toward one man.

Umar Sadiq’s name was certainly a surprise on the team-sheet. With Alfredo Morelos suspended and the cup-tied Kyle Lafferty not available, Sadiq was the next man available to Gerrard.

It was the Nigerian’s first appearance for Rangers since August and that rustiness showed. Despite small glimpses early on that the Roma loanee might prove a handful for the Dons, he soon struggled to give Rangers what they needed.

Whilst the service into him was far from good enough, he truly never looked likely to score and Rangers were a blunt instrument going forward.

Rangers lack strength in depth in the central striking position and Sadiq’s lack of playing time certainly proved costly yesterday evening.
