Some Newcastle United fans react as Christian Atsu pens goodbye message after exit
Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting after Christian Atsu penned a goodbye message on Twitter after confirming his exit.
Newcastle have opted against offering Atsu a new contract to extend his Tyneside stay into a sixth season. The Ghanaian will now leave St. James’ Park when his terms expire at the end of the month.
Atsu moved to the North East from Chelsea on an initial loan deal in 2016 under Rafa Benitez. The Toon later agreed a £6million fee to purchase the forward after he played an instrumental role in securing promotion.
Atsu scored five goals and penned three assists in 32 games during Newcastle’s Championship-winning season. He remained a key player for each of the following two seasons but struggled for game time under Steve Bruce.
It left the £30,000-per-week winger to play sporadic U23 games to keep fit ahead of becoming a free agent. The 29-year-old has now taken to social media to share his gratitude for the support fans have offered.
“When I arrived in Newcastle almost 5 years ago, I was made to feel welcome from the start by everyone at the club and especially by the fans,” Atsu wrote. “I grew to love the city and my young family feel very at home here.
“Sadly, the time has now come for me to leave the club. So, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who is part of the Newcastle Utd family. Thank you to the Toon Army fans, a lot of whom I’ve met around the city.
“I will never forget my time in the North East and for sure I will follow the results every week. Thank you, my Geordie staff, players and fans, it’s been a pleasure!”
Newcastle fans say farewell to Atsu
Atsu’s exit has been a long-time coming after Bruce omitted the forward from his 25-man squad last season. The Ghanaian started just six of his 19 Premier League outings in 2019/20, with his last top-flight start coming in January 2020.
Newcastle fans have now flocked to Atsu’s post to say goodbye to the 60-cap attacker. Sharing their fond memories of the winger’s efforts in black-and-white and wishing him well for the future.
