Some Newcastle United fans react as Bayer Leverkusen deal Kristoffer Ajer transfer blow

Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting online as Steve Bruce is dealt a blow in pursuit of Kristoffer Ajer.

That’s according to the Northern Echo, who claim Bayer Leverkusen are ‘increasingly confident’ of a deal for the Celtic defender. The Bundesliga outfit spoke with the centre-half over the weekend and believe a deal is achievable.

Newcastle had spoken with Celtic regarding Ajer’s situation as Bruce wanted a deal sewn up before other clubs begin negotiations. But the Norwegian’s representatives are now in talks with a raft of suitors.

Bruce wanted Newcastle to sign Ajer after marking defensive signings as his early-summer priority. He is currently at risk of losing Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez when their contracts expire later this month.

Eddie Howe To Newcastle Is EMBARRASSING

The Toon are, however, only willing to pay £6million for their long-time target Ajer. He also has a potential suitor in Norwich City following their promotion back into the Premier League (Daily Record).

Newcastle have kept tabs on Ajer for the past few seasons but faced a £16m (Daily Record) asking price. Celtic are willing to sell the 23-year-old as they now prepare for a vast overhaul of their squad under a new manager.

Leverkusen are now positioned well to sign Ajer following talks, however, with the allure of Europa League football in their favour. He would also reunite with former Celtic teammate Jeremie Frimpong who left Parkhead for the BayArena in January.

Newcastle fans doubt Ajer deal

Some Newcastle fans reacting on social media have offered their disbelief at Ajer slipping through their fingers. Confidence among the Toon fanbase of a deal for the 21-cap brute is now low with Leverkusen edging ahead.

So, here is what these Newcastle supporters had to say on Bayer Leverkusen’s confidence in a deal for Ajer…
