Some Newcastle United fans have reacted after an update emerged over their chase for Mario Lemina.

According to the Northern Echo, OGC Nice are set to win the race for the Southampton midfielder. The publication have claimed the Gabon international has opted for a move to the Ligue 1 side.

It leaves the Magpies still needing reinforcements in midfield. The club are hopeful a move can be completed for Joe Willock, after Emile Smith Rowe signed a new contract at Arsenal.

Steve Bruce’s team are enduring a tough transfer window thus far. Prior to news about Lemina, the club had already missed out on Kristoffer Ajer, who joined Brentford instead.

Newcastle desperately need a midfield signing

Newcastle desperately need a midfield signing amid the update on Lemina.

The club have been left hamstrung in the centre of the pitch in recent weeks. Bruce revealed earlier in the week that Jonjo Shelvey will be out for a while with a calf injury.

That leaves Isaac Hayden, the Longstaff brothers and Jeff Hendricks as the only options for the start of the season.

However, Matthew Longstaff could well be on the move this summer, in a loan move. Meanwhile, his brother, Sean, and Hendricks played bit-part roles in the second half of last season.

That leaves the former Gunners man as his head coach’s only trusted option going into next term. And frankly, that is a dangerous position to be in.
