Some Liverpool supporters have been delighted to learn that the club are ready to negotiate fresh terms for talented defender Joe Gomez.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds believe Gomez deserves a reward for his impressive development over the last year or so.

The 2015 signing from Charlton Athletic has made 53 appearances for the club since arriving for a snip £3.5 million fee.

This term, he has been outstanding in defence alongside Virgil van Dijk, with the pair a big reason for the club’s best ever defensive start to a season.

He has made fantastic progress, especially in the wake of the serious knee injury he suffered soon after joining the club.

World class potential

The fact that Liverpool are trying to tie him down to a better contract is absolutely no surprise.

Gomez really does have the potential to become world class.

He possesses all the attributes a top modern centre-half should have, such as pace, power, positioning, versatility and ball-playing.

Him playing alongside van Dijk will improve him immensely, and the Reds could boast a monster in a few years.

The maturity with which he plays for one still so young is actually scary.
