Liverpool are ready to hand veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan a one-year contract following Alisson’s injury blow.

The Brazilian suffered a calf injury during Friday’s Premier League clash with Norwich City and is now looking at a lay off of around six weeks according to The Mirror.

It’s a major blow for the Reds, with Alisson having enjoyed an outstanding debut season at Anfield.

New signing Adrian will take his place between the sticks, but with Caoimhin Kelleher not yet fit after recovering from a broken wrist, the club are needing some extra cover.

The Liverpool Echo are now reporting Liverpool have agreed a contract with Lonergan, after he joined the club’s pre-season tour while Alisson was resting after Copa America duty.

Lonergan is a free agent and can therefore be signed by the club despite the transfer window for Premier League clubs being closed.

He impressed against Sevilla and generally gave a good account of himself during his time at the club.

Liverpool fans react

Liverpool fans provided a mostly negative response to Lonergan’s reported contract offer on social media, with some fearing it means Alisson could be out for longer than has been initially claimed:
