Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media after the Premier League announced that Anthony Taylor and Paul Tierney had been appointed to referee Thursday’s match at Manchester United.

Taylor has held the whistle for more Liverpool fixtures than those of any side since turning professional in 2010, with the 42-year-old overseeing 43 games across all competitions.

The Cheshire resident has refereed three of the Reds’ Premier League matches this term, in which Jurgen Klopp’s side have won just once with victory over Tottenham Hotspur in December followed by defeat at Leicester City and a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

Manchester United have had three of their top-flight fixtures this season ruled by Taylor, in which they have won twice and lost once with a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Spurs on matchday four followed by a 6-2 mauling of Leeds and a 2-0 win over rivals Man City.

Taylor has previously officiated one derby clash between Liverpool and Manchester United when appointed for the club’s Anfield meeting in October 2016, which ended goalless after an uneventful encounter as Klopp failed to break down Jose Mourinho’s defensive tactics.

Taylor will be supported on Thursday night by assistants Gary Beswick, Adam Nunn and fourth official David Coote, while Tierney will oversee VAR alongside Timothy Wood.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a first Premier League win at Old Trafford since March 2014 when they visit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils, with Klopp’s men six points outside of the Champions League positions and only having played one game less.
