Some Liverpool fans were reacting after Stewart Downing announced his retirement from football.

What’s the story?

It emerged earlier in the day that the former Reds winger had hung up his boots at the age of 37.

Prior to his move to Anfield, Downing was flying down the wings for Middlesbrough.

It earned him a move to Aston Villa, where he transferred to in the summer of 2009. After 11 goals and 14 assists in 79 appearances, he moved to Merseyside for just over £20m in 2011.

However, his time was marred by inconsistencies and after two years he left for West Ham.

However, rather unfortunately, Downing joined Liverpool a period where they struggled badly.

Roy Hodgson had just been sacked during the 2010/2011 season after which Kenny Dalglish returned. His time was fairly successful with a trophy, however, still very much a struggle in terms of overall quality.

But, that hasn’t blinkered the views of fans, who took to Twitter to react…
