Some Liverpool fans were delighted after a video of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez emerged from last night’s pre-season friendly.

What’s the story?

The duo made their long-awaited returns in the 69th minute after over nine months out with injury.

Van Dijk suffered a cruciate ligament problem after a horrendous tackle by Jordan Pickford in last October’s 0-0 draw with Everton.

Just weeks later, the England international suffered an injury while playing for his country.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had initially claimed neither player would make their return in the clash with Hertha Berlin. However, he sprung a surprise late on.

Van Dijk and Gomez return hands hope

As soon as both centre-backs were out, there was a strong feeling the club’s title aspirations faded away as well.

However, the return of Van Dijk and Gomez hands Liverpool hope in the title race.

When you add Ibrahima Konate into the mix, it further enhances the side’s defensive capabilities.

With Liverpool sorted at both ends of the pitch, their squad is far more competitive to take on Manchester City. The Citizens had it easy last season as they strolled to a title win with very little competition.
