Some Leeds United fans react as Frank Lampard is dealt an opening day thrashing

It would be fair to say that Frank Lampard became a pantomime villain at Leeds United last season.

It all began with the Spygate saga, in which Leeds United were caught out watching Lampard’s Derby County in training sessions ahead of a meeting last season.

Lampard’s reaction to the furore eventually led to the ‘Stop Crying Frank Lampard’ song to the tune of an Oasis classic.

In the end, despite Leeds comfortably beating Derby on three occasions last season, Lampard got the last laugh. Leeds imploded in the second-leg of their play-off clash with Derby and Lampard’s side went on to Wembley to face Aston Villa.

The former England international took over from Maurizio Sarri at his former club Chelsea. Yesterday, Lampard led his team into his first Premier League game as manager and it did not end well.

Manchester United ran out 4-0 winners after an excellent display of counter-attacking football at Old Trafford.

Of course, Manchester United also beat Leeds 4-0 this summer in a pre-season friendly, a piece of irony also not lost on some Leeds fans.

Now whilst Leeds United fans would normally never enjoy seeing their bitter Lancashire rivals pick up a convincing win, some on Twitter were ready to accept it in the case of Lampard’s demise.

If that doesn’t show just how much Leeds fans learned to dislike Lampard last season, nothing does.
