Some Leeds fans erupt over notable U23s omission ahead of West Ham clash

Some Leeds United fans have welcomed the absence of Charlie Cresswell from the Under-23s squad for their Premier League 2 game on Friday.

The Whites U23s are up against Blackburn this evening, and Mark Jackson’s squad doesn’t include Cresswell and Crysencio Summerville.

Both players, as well as Joe Gelhardt and Stuart McKinstry, have seen their good U23s form rewarded with senior appearances this season.

Indeed, all four appeared in the midweek Carabao Cup victory at Fulham, and Cresswell was named man of the match for a dominant display.

On Saturday, Marcelo Bielsa’s charges face West Ham amid an injury crisis, so the Argentine could look to the U23s for depth.

It remains to be seen whether Luke Ayling, Raphinha and Jack Harrison will be available to play against the Hammers.

And if Cresswell is involved, it would be the first Premier League appearance of his career.

Needless to say, some Leeds fans are delighted not to see his name in the U23s squad, suggesting he’s going to be involved for Bielsa’s side:

Cresswell joined the Leeds youth setup in 2013 and has progressed through the ranks to the Under-23s and the brink of the first team.

The 19-year-old defender has made two senior appearances to date for Leeds, as well as 27 U23s appearances.

Cresswell also made the England Under-21 matchday squad for the European U21 Championship qualifying win over Kosovo in September.
