Derby were beaten 2-1 at home last night by fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City, in what represents a blow early on in Phillip Cocu’s reign.
The Rams were handed a late lifeline by a goal from substitute Jack Marriott, which led many supporters on Twitter to call for him to start on Saturday.
Derby take on another big-hitter in West Brom on that occasion, and Cocu suggested that Marriott may get a start then, as well as explaining why he didn’t last night.
As per the club’s official Twitter account, he said: “After the cup game, he had a minor problem in training. If he plays too long and picks up another injury, he’s out for a longer period of time. Maybe on Saturday, he is ready to play from the start.”
Many fans were angry that Marriott didn’t start last night but Cocu’s comments suggest he might be on the same page in terms of how much he rates the hitman – he just wants to protect him from further injury.
Either way, everyone connected with the club will want to see an improved display against the Baggies, where another goal from Marriott wouldn’t go amiss at all.
Play him longer than 7 minutes

The most disappointing thing about this defeat was that we didn’t look like scoring until @jackmarriott94 came on

Is that enough for Marriott to get a start at the weekend?
