A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to praise defender Tyrone Mings for being one of the few shining lights in today’s dismal Premier League defeat.
Dean Smith’s charges headed to a resurgent Southampton but things went pear-shaped quickly as the hosts netted within the first ten minutes.
Moussa Djenepo got the better of Ezri Konsa near the byline and sent a cross towards the front post for Shane Long to bundle past Pepe Reina with his thigh in the eighth minute.
By this point, Mings had already cleared numerous threatening balls and were it not for his display, Aston Villa could have found themselves further behind sooner in the game.
In the end, Villa remained in the game – in terms of scoreline at least – right until the latter stages of injury time, when Stuart Armstrong made it two by finishing from Che Adams’ delivery.
Plenty of claret and blue faithful were unhappy with the performance in the 2-0 defeat to say the least, with relegation an ever increasing possibility.
One positive for some supporters came in Mings’ display – though that in itself came with a caveat, namely the prospect of losing him at the end of the season.
Here is some of the Villa fan reaction regarding the 26-year-old’s performance:

Outside of Mings and Grealish everyone in claret and blue should be ashamed and embarrassed including Deano. #avfc

Absolutely pathetic so far, thank god for Mings and Reina otherwise we’d be completely out of this. It’s the lack of fight that is really annoying me, these players need to realise quick that we’re fighting for survival #avfc

The defence is the problem. Everyone cried out for a striker in Jan which was needed but we didn’t have a problem with scoring. We are too open at the back and concede to many shots which eventually leads to goals. Our CBs are rubbish other than Mings. #avfc

Haha every single player walked around Ings… except Mings who walked through him ?

In the summer, Mings, Mcginn and Jack will all go #avfc

Fred done nothing today. Centre halves bar Mings did nothing. Contributed nothing. Targett was quiet.
The whole team was shocking.
And we’ve seen that performance far too many times this season.
At what point will there be any obvious consequence of our own actions? #avfc

Cant defend to save our lives. Worst defense in the League. Mings the only decent defender. No defensive cover from the midfield. Something needs to change but will it ?

Up next for Villa – currently 17th in the Premier League table a point clear of the relegation zone but having played a game more than the bottom three – is the League Cup final against Manchester City next Sunday, before a return to top-flight action on 9 March away at Leicester City.
