Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Stoke City yesterday, with Albert Adomah’s second-half finish enough to cancel out Sam Vokes early goal for the Potters. It was a fairly uninspiring fixture and Aston Villa’s season appears to be frittering away to nothing.

There was one big call that Dean Smith had to make. The Aston Villa boss decided that Lovre Kalinic’s lack of training this week due to a concussion was enough of a reason to leave him on the bench.

So Jed Steer was handed a chance to shine.

The 26-year-old has been at Aston Villa for six years but has spent most of his time away from Villa Park on loan at other clubs. He began the current campaign at Charlton Athletic where the fans at The Valley loved him and he would have hoped to impress against Stoke.

The stopper did not have much to do in the game but there is no doubt that some Aston Villa fans feel as though he could have done better with the goal. Vokes’ deft touch seemed soft and Steer managed to get his hand to the ball. However, he could not keep it out of the net and it was certainly a goal the Aston Villa stand-in will feel he could have done better with.
