Some Aston Villa fans laud Martinez after record-equalling performance
Some Aston Villa fans were lauding Emiliano Martinez after the Argentine equalled a long-standing club record during the 0-0 draw with Everton.
Having kept Carlo Ancelotti’s men out, the former Arsenal man equalled the number of clean sheets kept in a single Premier League season by a Villains’ ‘goalkeeper. Brad Friedel kept 15 during the 2009/2010 campaign when the Midlands outfit finished sixth in the top-flight.
The South American has enjoyed a stunning debut season with Dean Smith’s side and has let in just 41 goals across 35 league games. He was labelled as a ‘massive difference’ by former Arsenal man Ian Wright after his performance against Wolves back in March.
It wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to claim the 28-year-old has been the signing of the season in the English top-flight.
The difference between Villa finishing in the bottom half, struggling against relegation, and finishing midtable comfortably has been the Martinez.
Here are how some fans reacted to him breaking the record…
