Some Arsenal fans react as reported target Hakan Calhanoglu reopens talks with AC Milan
Some Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media to reports by Calcio In Pillole, who claim Hakan Calhanoglu has reopened negotiations with AC Milan over a new contract.
Calhanoglu is a target of Mikel Arteta for the transfer window with his Rossoneri contract set to expire this summer. But the Turkey playmaker also has admirers from Juventus and Manchester United as he edges toward leaving the San Siro.
However, Milan are reluctant to lose the 27-year-old for free and have returned to the negotiating table. There has been a strong stalemate in recent weeks but have reiterated their best offer and want a quick reply.
Calhanoglu has demanded a minimum annual salary of €5.5million (£90k-p/w). But he could earn even more after receiving a lucrative offer to move to Qatar.
A decision on the midfielder’s Rossoneri future is expected in the coming days. Calhanoglu was a star of their 2020/21 season, with only four Serie A players offering more assists than his 10. He also offered four goals in 33 games and scored five in the Europa League.
Juventus were expected to contact the 56-cap international’s agent after Massimiliano Allegri gave the green light to a deal (Calciomercato). But Calhanoglu has not agreed terms with the Turin outfit and will reject the advances of Qatari sides.
A move to Liverpool has also been ruled out as Jurgen Klopp’s side chose against tabling a contract to (Calciomercato). The Reds had spoken with his representatives after Arsenal and Chelsea tabled contracts worth less than Milan’s offer (Il Milanista).
Arsenal fans mixed on Calhanoglu transfer
But Arsenal fans reacting to Calcio In Pillole’s claim that Milan have reopened discussions with Calhanoglu have shared mixed views.
That’s because some believe the Turkey maestro would be an ideal addition to Arteta’s squad as he would improve the club’s creativity. No Serie A player registered more key passes than Calhanoglu (100) last season, while also creating 10 big goalscoring chances (SofaScore).
But others question if the Gunners are in with a chance of signing Calhanoglu given the rival interest. A few also believe he is not the right player for the Emirates Stadium side to sign.
