Some Arsenal fans react as rarely seen defender departs after six years

Arsenal bid goodbye to Julio Pleguezuelo today, with the 22-year-old officially joining Dutch outfit FC Twente.

The Spaniard’s contract had run down, and the 22-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Eredivisie club.

Pleguezuelo never appeared for Arsenal in the Premier League, and only ever made one first-team appearance for the club, which came under Unai Emery in October 2018 in the Carabao Cup against Blackpool.

The defender had been with the Gunners since leaving Barcelona’s youth academy in 2013.

Pleguezuelo made a decent impact in the youth setup during his time with the north Londoners.

He became the captain of the U21s in the 2015/16 season, and led the Gunners to a PL2 play-off final win over Aston Villa.

The Palma-born youngster never quite had it in him to make the jump and become a regular first-teamer though, despite Arsenal’s continued defensive struggles over the past few years.
