Some Arsenal fans were left seething after Mikel Arteta’s comments on the club’s display across two-legs during the draw, and subsequent exit, from the Europa League at the hands of Villarreal.

Speaking after drew 0-0 with Unai Emery’s outfit, the Spaniard claimed that his side performed well enough over both legs to make it through against the La Liga side.

The Gunners were made to look incredibly ordinary by an unbelievably organised Villarreal side, who managed to restrict the north London outfit to just two shots on target from 14 attempts.

It was enough to see the Spanish team through versus the Reds after the Yellow Submarine won the first-leg 2-1 thanks to goals by Trigueros Munoz and Raul Albiol.

When commenting about his team’s display, Arteta said: “I think over two legs and what happened today in the second half we deserved to win the game. For me, it’s very important that at the defining moment you should have everybody available at their best. And so many people trying to compete but not at their best.”
