Some Arsenal fans have criticised defender Sokratis, after the defender seemingly downplayed the importance of the captaincy.
The former Borussia Dortmund has insisted it ‘doesn’t matter’ who skippers the team, because they are all ‘like a family’.
The armband has changed hands at the Emirates following Granit Xhaka’s behaviour against Crystal Palace, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang now the official club captain.

The Gabonese hitman heads a group of captains consisting of Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil.
Speaking about Unai Emery’s choice of Aubameyang, Sokratis said (Telegraph): “I think it is the first time he is a captain. For me it’s important that Aubameyang first has to score, he has to do his work. The captaincy or who has this [armband] on the pitch, I don’t think it is very important.
“He [Aubameyang] is a very good guy. [But] who has the captaincy is not very important. It is important that all the team is good in the dressing room. We are like a family. In the end, who brings to the pitch the captaincy is the last thing.”
Arsenal fans react
The £92,000-a-week Greek star’s (Spotrac) comments have not gone down particularly well, with a large number of fans not buying into Emery’s ‘captains group’ idea.

Coming from a set of fans who have previously seen big characters like Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira wear the armband, they feel the captaincy is a big honour and should be a role cherished by the man wearing the armband.
It is a position that should be respected by all players in the team, and some feel Sokratis’ take suggests the wrong mentality:
