Arsenal legend Paul Merson has spoken highly of Gunners newcomer Gabriel Magalhaes after his impressive debut for Mikel Arteta’s side, in conversation with Sky Sports.
Earlier this month, Arsenal announced the signing of the 22-year-old defender from Lille on a long-term contract, Sky Sports reporting a fee of £27million.
Arteta named Gabriel in his starting XI for the Gunners’ Premier League season opener away at Fulham, where he shone in a 3-0 win for the North Londoners.
Although the Brazilian looked a little nervous right at the start, he grew into the game and was defensively sound, with a debut goal the cherry on top.
In terms of Arsenal’s win at Fulham, these are the dangerous games; you don’t want to play promoted teams when they come up,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.
“You want to play them in January when it’s hit home how hard it is, and they have a couple injuries.
“I thought it was a great result for Arsenal. Gabriel makes his debut, is solid, and scores a goal. It was a good performance.”
As far as debuts go, Gabriel passed with flying colours and then some, and with Willian also impressing on his competitive bow, it looks as though Arteta has hit the jackpot in the transfer market so far – and that’s before getting onto Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s new deal.
Gabriel, who lined up in the centre of Arsenal’s back three with Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney either side of him, arrived at Arsenal to much fanfare, and though it’s early days, it looks very much justified – things are increasingly exciting at the Emirates Stadium as the Arteta revolution rolls on.
