Sold in 2012, is it finally time for Rafael van der Vaart to make his Tottenham return?

Tottenham Hotspur legend Rafael van der Vaart recently announced his retirement from football and is currently without a job.

At 35 years of age, the Dutchman should make his way back to north London and return to the club where he enjoyed his best days — but this time, serve as a coach.

Van der Vaart is a universally-adored fan favourite at Spurs, thanks to two glorious seasons at White Hart Lane in the early 2010s.

Signed from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, van der Vaart provided 13 goals and nine assists in his 2010/11 debut season — remarkable numbers for a newcomer to English football.

The following year, the Dutch international continued his impressive form, chipping in with 11 goals and nine assists. Yet van der Vaart was sold to Hamburg in the summer of 2012, cutting his beloved time at Spurs short.

But now that the attacking midfielder has hung up his boots, van der Vaart should return to his spiritual home and join the Tottenham Hotspur coaching set-up.

Such a move is not unprecedented: after Scott Parker retired from football he returned to Tottenham and served as the club’s U-18 coach.

Rafael van der Vaart should follow in Parker’s footsteps and come back to coach at Tottenham, returning to the site of his glory days six years after leaving.
