Sold by Everton, Joe Williams sent off in first league start for new club

Everton decided to move the midfielder on this summer with Wigan Athletic snapping him up.

Some Everton fans were left unhappy this summer at the club’s decision to move academy talent Joe Williams out the exit door. After impressing on loan at Bolton Wanderers last season plenty of fans at Goodison Park felt the youngster could be due a chance in the first-team.

However, with the arrivals of Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, and Jean-Philippe Gbamin this summer, first-team chances were likely to be scarce for the 22-year-old and he was sold.

Wigan Athletic won the race to sign the player. The Championship side paid over £2 million for the player, according to the Liverpool Echo, who joined USA international Antonee Robinson in switching Goodison for the DW.

Yesterday, he made his first league start for his new club. Having previously played the final 18 minutes of last weekend’s loss to Preston and the full 90 against Stoke in the EFL Cup, this was his chance to really impose himself at his new club.

Unfortunately for the former Everton player, things did not go to plan.

Williams picked up two yellow cards in the opening 20 minutes to pick up the second red card of his professional career.

Everton fans will, of course, be hoping Williams can find his feet away from Finch Farm. Hopefully, he can overcome a difficult start once he returns from suspension.
