Sol Campbell urges Mikel Arteta and Mesut Ozil to ‘come together’ for the good of Arsenal

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has told Talksport that something has got to give between Mikel Arteta and Mesut Ozil ahead of the new season.

The German didn’t play a single minute of football following the restart, missing out on the club’s triumph in the FA Cup.

Naturally, that sparked rumours over his future, although the World Cup-winning maestro insists he has a desire to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Campbell believes the two need to sort their issues out for the club of the new season.

He told Talksport: “Obviously there’s something going on. It’s there for all to see.

“I think it’s going to come down to how they approach it and the conversations they have in private. How Ozil trains and things like that. It’s really going to come down to that.

“They need to come together somehow but if there’s a stand-off then nothing is going to happen.

“Something’s got to give and to give in is not always to lose. You don’t always have to give in and it means you are losing. It’s just sometimes you have to meet halfway.”

Arsenal finished in eighth place last season and despite the FA Cup success, Arteta will undoubtedly want to do better in the Premier League.

Ozil could still play a part but as Campbell says, something might have to give in that sense.

Compromise

The 92-cap international is a decent player on his day and on £350,000-a-week, he is certainly better off fighting for his place than kicking up a stink in the stands.

Arteta is an intelligent man and he will know that too and with that in mind, Campbell perhaps has a point.

Maybe it’ll be down to Ozil to instigate the conversation but if he doesn’t Arteta should definitely reconsider his decision to nudge him down the pecking order.

It’ll be a long season for the Gunners again with the demands of the Europa League and Arteta could well need Ozil throughout the campaign.
