Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has said that his old club need to sign someone like Liverpool midfielder James Milner to beef up their midfield.
As per TalkSport, Campbell sought to take some of the heat off the backline by saying that Unai Emery needs better options in the engine room, and praised Milner despite the fact he’s only made one Premier League start this season (Transfermarkt).
He said: “You look at someone like Milner, the attitude. The Ray Parlour attitude. That’s the kind of attitude that Arsenal need. The love of football and desire to keep going, they’re lacking that. I look at Milner and think we need a little bit of that at Arsenal.
“I don’t want robots. I want guys who feel the game and say, ‘You know what, it’s too tight, let’s go long’ or, ‘There’s a bit more space, let’s play short’. I want guys who think outside the box, that’s what you need. Guys outside the box say, ‘You haven’t got me, because I’m going to do something else’.”
TBR’s View – Arsenal have been talking about leadership for far too long now
Arsenal have been talking about leadership since well before Arsene Wenger left the club. There’s little doubt that Milner has added that to Liverpool since moving on a free transfer from Manchester City.
The Gunners tried something similar when taking Petr Cech, and to a lesser extent, David Luiz off Chelsea but they have been unable to change the culture of the club.
It would take more than one player to get that changed, but with Milner’s contract running out at the end of the season, perhaps an unlikely swoop could be on the cards…
