Sol Campbell discusses Arsenal's reportedly imminent move to sign Brighton ace Ben White

Sol Campbell has told TalkSPORT that reportedly imminent Arsenal signing Ben White has got to hit the ground running at The Emirates. The England defender is expected to complete a £50million move from Brighton to Arsenal this week. Campbell thinks White needs to start well at Arsenal.

White, 23, joins Arsenal after just one season in the Premier League with Brighton. Having caught the eye at Leeds during the Yorkshire side’s promotion to the Premier League, White returned to the south coast and starred under Graham Potter. That, despite playing in numerous positions.

Arsenal icon Campbell was asked about the £50million move and whether he felt that amount of money on an unproven defender is the right move. Campbell believes Arsenal are looking to the long-term future in that position, and see the future in White. But feels he needs a good start.

“He’s one for the future, 23 years old,” Campbell said. “Definitely one for the future. I don’t think you can know too much about someone at that age. It needs to work out, Arsenal are not in a position to shift out £50million for a player. He has to start, if it gets going, then all good.

“It is a difficult one. It’s a lot of money but they’re looking at the years ahead. They see a future. At £50million, you’ve got to be a master of your position.”

Why White will turn out a bargain at Arsenal, amid Campbell comments

Arsenal fans are right to be sceptical. On the face of it, White has only played in the Premier League for one season. But look deeper than his stats, and you’ll realise that White is a player of supreme quality – that offers versatility in numerous positions. Right-back, centre-back or midfield.

His tutorship under Marcelo Bielsa has seen White go from a diamond in the rough, into a sought-after gem. Beautifully posed on the ball, White’s calmness and temperament is twinned with confidence and poise. Execution, alongside dedication and aggression – he is the perfect defender.
