‘So solid’: Some Tottenham fans laud Matt Doherty for ‘class’ Leicester display

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have been lauding Matt Doherty on social media for turning in a ‘class’ performance at Leicester City on Sunday.

Ryan Mason secured Spurs’ place in the Europa Conference League with a 4-2 win at the King Power Stadium, after goals from Harry Kane and Gareth Bale helped overturn a lead the Foxes held twice.

Mason had elected to field Doherty at right-back for his side’s trip to the East Midlands in place of Serge Aurier or Japhet Tanganga, with the £14.7million (Guardian) Jose Mourinho summer signing from Wolves returning to the starting line-up for the first time in 10 Premier League games.

Doherty had played just seven minutes in Tottenham’s previous nine top-flight fixtures after overcoming an injury sustained on international duty in March, with the £65,000-per-week (Spotrac) defender emerging as Mason’s third choice for the role.

The Republic of Ireland ace impressed some supporters on his return to action, though, with Doherty earning praise on social media after putting in a shift in both directions and playing a role in the build-up to Kane’s goal.

Doherty further registered a team-high four successful tackles plus four clearances, three interceptions and won all three of his defensive aerial duels, per WhoScored.

He is yet to record more tackles in a single league game since joining Tottenham and has only once offered more interceptions with four at home to Crystal Palace while making five clearances at Fulham, both at the start of March.
