Newcastle didn’t have enough in the tank to beat AC Milan on Wednesday.
After so many injuries and so many games in a short space of time, the Magpies came up short against the Italian giants this week.
Many of Newcastle’s players looked utterly spent against Milan, and speaking on Off The Ball, Keith Treacy has highlighted two players who looked exhausted during the game.
Treacy noted that both Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon looked so tired down that right flank, claiming that while Gordon is usually electric, he just didn’t have the gas in the tank to play his game against Milan.

Gordon looked exhausted
Treacy shared his verdict on the winger.
“He sprints after the ball and people say that’s a given but it really isn’t. Players run after the ball as a token gesture, but Anthony Gordon sets the tone with the press when he doesn’t have the ball, and he’s electric when he does. I’m sure that when Eddie Howe said he needed to take Tripps and Gordon off last night they’d have said ‘don’t do that.’ But it was needs must, they were so so leggy,” Treacy said.
Can’t blame him
Gordon did look leggy against Milan, but you really can’t blame the winger for looking out of shape on this occasion.
At the end of the day, Gordon has played a lot of football at high-intensity as of late, and that run of consecutive games playing such a high-octane style would lead any athlete to struggle.
Sadly for Newcastle, this issue may get worse before it gets better. The injuries aren’t subsiding, and heading into the festive period, games really do start to come thick and fast.
Newcastle may just have to weather the storm for the next few weeks, because this is going to continue to be a very tricky period for the Magpies.
