‘So horrible’: Jermaine Beckford frustrated by Leeds United display in West Ham loss

Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has been commenting on the club’s loss to West Ham United last night.

Leeds took the lead through a retaken Mateusz Klich penalty but were, on the whole, outplayed by West Ham, who ended up securing the win with goals from both Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna.

David Moyes’ side did a number on Leeds with a well-considered performance from which they took away a deserved win.

For Beckford, who played under Moyes at Everton after heading to Goodison Park from Leeds United, it was hard to watch.

“(West Ham) made moments in that game so horrible,” Beckford stated on Sky Sports Friday night football. “Leeds United could not get the momentum going.”

“It was frustrating to watch. It was disappointing, from my perspective, watching because I know how good Leeds are when they’re attacking when they’re in possession. I didn’t see that today. I saw a lot of high-energy work-rate but I didn’t see the stuff in the final third that wins you games that makes real clear-cut opportunities.”

There is no doubt that West Ham did a tremendous job on Leeds United.

They swarmed Kalvin Phillips out of the game, punished Leeds’ biggest weakness in their defending of set-pieces, and were largely happy with letting Leeds have time on the ball and staying compact defensively, leaving no gaps for the splintering football Marcelo Bielsa’s side are capable of.

It was almost the blueprint of how to beat Leeds and fans at Elland Road, including Beckford, will just be hoping others cannot implement it so successfully as the season goes on.
