‘So frantic’: Pundit criticises one aspect of Man City star’s game in historic England win

Gary Neville criticised Manchester City star Kyle Walker during England’s historic 2-1 win over Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Speaking at halftime during ITV’s coverage of the game (20:55: 07/07), the Manchester United legend picked out that Walker, as well as Luke Shaw, were making runs up the pitch too early, leaving the centre-backs exposed in defence.

England came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 in front of a packed Wembley Stadium to book their ticket to the first final the nation will compete in since 1966.

Fellow City star Raheem Sterling was instrumental in the victory. With the attacker drawing the defender in for the equalising own goal. As well as winning the penalty in extra time to seal the victory for the Three Lions.

‘Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker are looking to go up far too’

But for Neville, Walker was playing risky football against the Danes. The former England international said: “But, on the wider game, it’s been so frantic, not just in possession in the final third. But actually, our fullbacks have got to make sure they attach to our centre-backs.

“Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker are looking to go up far too early to engage with their wingbacks. It’s leaving Harry Maguire and John Stones at times space to cover in those channels. They’ve got to be patient in their defending.”

Whilst Walker was shaky at times in the first half, the City star more than made up for it in the remainder of the match. Along with Shaw, the England fullbacks were key to the hosts overturning the result.

With England set to compete in the Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday, Walker could be set to start in one of the biggest games of his career when the Three Lions take to the field at Wembley.
