Zech Medley has posted on Instagram after it was confirmed that the Arsenal defender has left the Gunners to join League One side Gillingham on a season-long loan – prompting reaction from Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe.
Medley, 20, has come through the ranks at Arsenal since 2016 – after a switch across London that saw him go from Chelsea’s academy to the Gunners. He is regarded as one of the club’s top up-and-coming talents.
Indeed, the four-time England Under-16 international is a regular at Under-23 level – clocking up 40 career appearances for Arsenal’s second string. He has even played three times for the senior side, but all three came in 2018-19.
Medley posted on Instagram after his first loan move away from Arsenal was engineered, with his task now to help Gillingham finish in the play-offs – after a decent tenth last season. He is “buzzing” at the move.
Medley’s chances of game time under Mikel Arteta are small. The likes of Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Sokratis, David Luiz, William Saliba, Pablo Mari and Shkodran Mustafi currently block his path into the first team.
But a loan spell at Gillingham could be just what Medley needs. Attacking midfielder Smith-Rowe – who also went on loan last term to Huddersfield, reacted on his story. Saka, meanwhile, commented on Medley’s post.
