Aston Villa host Bolton Wanderers this weekend, hoping to bounce back from back-to-back losses.
The Villans are in a transition phase with Dean Smith trying to get his methods across.
But Friday night’s clash with Bolton could be his chance to make his first bold call since taking over from Steve Bruce.
Smith should drop Alan Hutton, who has been under-performing in recent weeks.
Hutton had a great campaign last year but has struggled to keep up his standards this season.
The 33-year-old has been a mainstay for Aston Villa this season, playing in all 15 Championship matches.
But Smith must be brave and drop the veteran defender so that his team can reverse their poor run of form.
Bolton will sit deeper than most Championship sides when they travel to Villa Park on Friday night and Aston Villa could do with more attacking impetus.
If Hutton was dropped to the bench, that could allow Ahmed Elmohamady to move back into the right-back slot.
In turn, Smith could give a start to Yannick Bolasie or Anwar El-Ghazi. Both of these players have points to prove and could do some damage if they are in the right frame of mind.
Hutton needs a spell on the sidelines to show that his place should not be taken for granted.
