Everton drew 1-1 with Kariobangi Sharks in a pre-season friendly clash with Joe Williams scoring the goal. Williams, who has been linked with a summer exit, scored Everton’s equaliser in Kenya but missed in the penalty shootout.

Everton trailed Sharks by one goal when Williams stepped up. On 53 minutes, Williams scored a free-kick, hitting it low under the wall and past the goalkeeper’s left hand.

After watching his goal, many Everton fans were impressed, hailing his goal as ‘smart’ and ‘awesome’. There were no further goals in the 90 minutes and the game went to penalties.

Still buoyant from his free-kick, Williams stepped up with the first penalty. But the 22-year-old failed from 12 yards as the goalkeeper saved his effort. Everton eventually lost 4-3 in the shootout.

This performance would have sent mixed messages to Marco Silva, who is running the rule over Williams in pre-season. The midfielder will need to make an impression to earn a chance next year.

According to The Liverpool Echo, clubs from England and Germany want Williams this summer. The former Barnsley and Bolton loanee is set for a career-defining pre-season.
