Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia hopes that the lack of depth at full-back does not impact the club’s title hopes, The Mirror reports.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson operate on both sides of the Liverpool defence. With their attacking threat, both players are boosting Liverpool’s title dream.
But Hyypia is worried that the club did not sign adequate back-up options. He fears that Liverpool could struggle if Alexander-Arnold or Robertson suffers an injury.
Hyypia on Liverpool full-backs
Hyypia said (via The Mirror): “Trent and Andy are world-class full-backs but I just wish we could control their load a little bit for the season. They are so vital to the team pattern that they are playing many minutes because they are just so good.
“Maybe at some stage that could be a small problem but I hope the manager and his staff can balance their load so they are able to play as many vital minutes as they can. It’s tough to take them out because they add so much to the team, but I’d be worried if they got injured.”
Given their ability to bomb forward, join the attacks and provide multiple assists, Liverpool’s two full-backs are vital. Jurgen Klopp uses them as modern-day wing-backs and there are no natural deputies in the squad.
Joe Gomez would be the second choice right-back but he is more suited to the centre-half role. James Milner, a natural midfielder, is the back-up left-back. Perhaps Liverpool should look to sign a new player in the January window.
