Sky Sports pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has slammed Tottenham duo Clement Lenglet and Cristian Romero for their role against Aston Villa today.
Spurs kicked off 2023 in the worst possible way as Villa strolled into North London and came away with a comfortable 2-0 win. It was the nightmare new year for Antonio Conte, whose sided looked poor without the duo of Bentancur and Kulusevski in the squad.
However, there was little Conte could do about the opening Villa goal. A mistake from Hugo Lloris allowed Ollie Watkins to pounce and he picked out Emi Buendia to fire in.

But while Lloris was at fault and rightly criticised by the Sky team, Hasselbaink believed the defensive duo of Lenglet and Romero left a lot to be desired with their defensive efforts.
“How bad defender of Romero and Lenglet. You know, have a little bit of passion! Here, he gets pushed away. It’s a clever ball from Watkins, but come on,” Hasselbaink lamented on Sky.
Romero was back in the XI after a week or so of partying with the Argentina squad. And in reality, he looked like a player who’d been out on the beverages as well.
TBR’s View: Tottenham dire once again under Conte
It’s all well and good Spurs fans demanding more players and Conte wanting more backing in the market. But right now, the Italian isn’t getting a tune out of his players whatsoever.
That is down to him. It’s his team, tactics, and instructions that are leading to these poor results and performances.
Before long, Tottenham fans will become tired of what they’re seeing. The performances are poor and there is a reliance on individual moments from a Kane or Son to win the game. At the end of the day, Conte has to take responsibility for what are some dire displays.
