Sky Sports pundit claims Liverpool have a 'fantastic' 19-year-old prospect who can succeed Thiago
Paul Merson thinks that Fabio Carvalho to Liverpool is one of the top five signings in the Premier League so far this summer.
For SportsKeeda, Merson was asked to pick out the best deals which have already been completed in the top flight since the window opened.
Merson did not include the signing of Darwin Nunez, which has garnered more attention than Carvalho’s move, but predicts big things for the 19-year-old.
He says that Carvalho can make an impression next term, along with fellow former Fulham man Harvey Elliott, at Anfield.
Merson a fan of Carvalho
“Fabio Carvalho is not someone who will start from week one for Liverpool, but this guy is a top talent and played a big role in Fulham’s promotion bid last season,” said Merson.
“Jurgen Klopp just makes players better and I personally like his eye for talent. He did something similar with Harvey Elliott last season and the kid was playing unreal football before his injury against Leeds United, so I expect Carvalho to play an important role for Liverpool.
“I think this is the kind of signing other managers might look at and think, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’ because he’s a fantastic talent.
“I’m not sure, but my best guess is that Carvalho will start off as an attacker before eventually being transitioned into midfield. You look at the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara and realize that Liverpool’s midfield is running on its last legs, so I’m sure there’s some kind of succession plan already in place.”
Carvalho has officially become a Liverpool player today (July 1) now that his Fulham contract is over and he should get a chance to impress in pre-season.
It does not seem like the plan is for him to go out on loan, and he can show Klopp what he can do before the serious stuff starts.
Will he be one of the signings of the summer? Only time will tell, and it will be a tougher ask long term to succeed Thiago, although the Spaniard showed no signs of slowing down last season.
