Sky pundit says player Spurs sold this summer for £10m ‘wasn’t given a fair crack’ at N17; now doing ‘incredible’

Tottenham Hotspur parted company with Harry Winks this summer, selling him to Leicester City for a reported £10million.

But despite Spurs flying high at the top of the Premier League, the 27-year-old certainly hasn’t looked back since moving to the Midlands.

The Tottenham academy graduate is now playing a key role for the Foxes, currently top of the Championship by five points.

Winks has made 16 appearances for his new club, of which 14 have come in the league. He has also registered a goal in the second tier.

His new teammate Conor Coady labelled Winks as “an incredible footballer” when speaking to The Telegraph recently.

On Friday, the England international once again started in the centre of midfield for Leicester as they hosted Leeds United, who were also in the Premier League last term.

Sky Sports pundit and Elland Road cult hero Jermaine Beckford, speaking ahead of the match, is pleased that Winks left Tottenham in the summer.

“I’m just glad he’s here because he had a bit of a rough time at Tottenham,” he said on Sky Sports. “He wasn’t given a fair crack of the whip in my opinion.”

Our view

While it’s good to see Winks thriving at Leicester, it’s not as though he didn’t get any chances while at Tottenham.

He made over 200 competitive senior appearances while at Spurs. That’s hardly the sign of a player not being given a fair crack of the whip.

And besides, it was Winks’ choice. As per The Sun, he said he didn’t even wait for Ange Postecoglou to come in. The move was done and dusted by then.

This is one of these cases where everyone’s a winner. Winks is shining at Leicester, who in turn are pushing for promotion, and his move means they’re not missing James Maddison.

Likewise, Winks leaving hasn’t been a blow for Tottenham, who are also at the top of their division.
