Sky journalist shares what a Premier League manager told him about Tottenham’s Bryan Gil recently

Bryan Gil is a bit of an enigma of a footballer at Tottenham.

The Spaniard is a talented player, but his lack of physical ability has left him way down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur.

Numerous managers at Spurs haven’t been able to crack the code in terms of getting the best out of Gil over the past few years.

So, how is Gil best utilised? Well, according to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, speaking on Last Word on Spurs, one Premier League manager has privately suggested that the winger would be best used as a number 10.

Gil touted as a number 10

Thomas spoke about the conversation he had with a manager recently about Gil.

“Is he actually a number 10? I was speaking to a Premier League manager a few weeks ago who said that he thought he may be more of a number 10 playing in the hole, so it depends on what system he’d play and whether he’d be effective or not,” Thomas said.

“I think it’s been hard for him, this season he’s shown glimpses, but there’s a bit to his game missing, you need to see some dividends being paid.”

Decent idea

This could be a very good idea.

Gil has the technical ability to be a Premier League player, but the physical side of his game often lets him down.

However, if there’s any position in which a lack of physicality can be masked it’s that number 10 role, and perhaps Gil would thrive in that position.

Unfortunately, Tottenham already have James Maddison playing in that position, so there’s no space at Spurs, but perhaps if Gil gets a move within the Premier League, he could find himself playing just behind the striker in that role.
