Skriniar would be ideal defensive alternative if De Ligt won’t join Liverpool

Liverpool had Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar watched yesterday in Cardiff as his Slovakia side went down 1-0 against Wales, according to TeamTalk.

They report that, alongside the likes of Manchester United, the Reds had a scout at the Cardiff City Stadium as they look to further improve their defence this summer.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror reported that Jurgen Klopp is set to miss out on Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt – valued at £70m – as he is set to join Frenkie de Jong in moving to Barcelona.

That could see Liverpool ramp up their interest in Skriniar, reportedly valued at a more reasonable £30m, on the back of an impressive season at Inter.

As promising as Joe Gomez is and as ably as Joel Matip has deputised in recent weeks, it’s easy to see that another experienced central defender would help a Liverpool backline that has already improved staggeringly this season.

De Ligt is one of the hottest young players in the world – any top club would love to have him – but Skriniar would be a very good alternative if he can transfer his form from Serie A to the Premier League.

Beating Manchester United to his signature would be a welcome bonus too, not least because the Red Devils could do with defensive reinforcements even more than Liverpool would.
