Six Premier League clubs keen on Maitland-Niles deal - journalist

Alex Crook has told talkSPORT (24/8; 12:26) that there are up to six Premier League clubs keen on signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal, with Southampton amongst those interested in the 24-year-old.

Maitland-Niles needs to leave the Gunners before the transfer window shuts. He has played no part in Arsenal’s season so far. And reports claimed that Mikel Arteta has told the England international that he can go.

It has been a difficult time for the versatile midfielder. He spent the second-half of last season on loan with Roma in the hope of becoming the latest Premier League player to really launch his career in Italy.

However, he fell out of favour with the Giallorossi. And there seemed to be little talk of Jose Mourinho’s side looking at keeping him beyond the loan.

Nevertheless, it appears that he is going to attract plenty of offers before the deadline passes. In fact, Crook claimed that more than a quarter of the Premier League wants Maitland-Niles.

“Five or six Premier League clubs interested in taking him on loan. Southampton, Bournemouth, West Ham and Fulham. They’re interested in signing Maitland-Niles,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think here Arsenal would prefer a permanent transfer, or at least a loan with an option/obligation to buy. But lots of loan interest in Maitland-Niles.”

It is hard to see Arsenal agreeing to a loan deal for Maitland-Niles. His contract expires next summer. So it makes little sense for the Gunners to loan him out – unless they are not looking for a particularly significant transfer fee anyway.

The good news for Arsenal is that there is plenty of interest. That obviously increases the likelihood of a deal being agreed.

He has been described as a ‘fantastic‘ talent. But he now needs to get his development back on track after a difficult few years at the Emirates.
