Before the start of this season, Moussa Sissoko was something of a joke figure at Tottenham.
The Frenchman looked completely at odds with what Mauricio Pochettino was trying to build. Among a cheaply-assembled, young, vibrant side with a core of English players was an expensive, inconsistent midfielder who looked like Spurs’ biggest mistake in the transfer market.
As the injuries have mounted up this season, Sissoko has had plenty of opportunities to change opinions of him and somehow, he has managed it.
His commitment has been there in every game and his energy has been vital to a side that has been dropping like flies at times. There’s no doubt he has been the biggest surprise of Tottenham’s season so far.

Sissoko, who Spotrac claim earns £80,000 a week at Spurs, has finally come up trumps and shown why Pochettino brought him to the club from Newcastle in 2016.
His goal and assist output could still be better but he has offered thrust and battling qualities in midfield during a campaign where injury has prevented Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and the now-departed Mousa Dembele from doing so.
There surely couldn’t have been a Spurs fan before the season started who would have expected Sissoko to be among the discussion when their side’s top players were being discussed.
