Simon Mignolet and John Achterberg react as Liverpool make Thursday announcement
Liverpool have announced that Caomihin Kelleher has signed a long-term contract at Anfield, after a breakthrough season with The Reds. The Ireland goalkeeper made five appearances for the senior side under Jurgen Klopp in 2020-21. Simon Mignolet reacted, as did a couple of others.
Kelleher, 22, broke into the Liverpool side last season with a handful of first-team outings. Then, during 2020-21, Kelleher made five appearances despite the presence of both Alisson and Adrian. The latter has also signed a new deal, but Kelleher has agreed to stay put, putting pen to paper.
Not only has Kelleher become a first-team option for Liverpool, but he has also made his debut for Ireland. He came on at half-time during a recent friendly with Hungary – keeping a clean sheet during a 0-0 draw in Budapest. He made two brilliant saves, and was praised by Irish media.
What has Mignolet said about Kelleher and his new Liverpool deal?
Kelleher needs to leave Liverpool on loan. Now 22 years of age and at the beginning of what could potentially be a burgeoning international career, he needs game time. But with Liverpool penning Adrian down to what is likely to be another 12 months, Kelleher will remain third choice.
He might even get the odd Carabao Cup game, but the chances of Kelleher exceeding five appearances is unlikely. The goalkeeper needs to go on loan, join a Championship side and get 40 games. Mignolet reacted to the new Liverpool deal for Kelleher, as did John Achterberg and Jose Enrique.
