Simon Jordan has told talkSPORT that he has to take a lot back after what he said about Kieran Trippier when the defender was sealing his move to Newcastle United back in January.

Trippier was really a game-changing signing for the Magpies back in the winter. At the time, Eddie Howe’s side looked to be in big trouble in the Premier League.

Obviously, they had recently been taken over. But attracting their top targets to Tyneside may not be easy given that they were in danger of falling into the Championship a few months later.

But Trippier decided to take the gamble, leaving Atletico Madrid. And that prompted Jordan to tell talkSPORT that money was clearly the key factor behind his decision.

But Trippier has proved to be an amazing addition. He has been a leader for Newcastle. And he has perhaps played some of the best football of his career since returning to the Premier League.

And that left Jordan admitting that he had been too cynical all those months ago.

“He’s been a revelation, Trippier, since he’s come back to Newcastle so I take a lot back about what I said about his motivations because his performances on the pitch have been exceptional,” he told talkSPORT today.

Newcastle enjoyed a brilliant second-half of the season. Ultimately, they had no problem keeping themselves in the top-flight. And that has given the club the platform to really kick on from.

Trippier’s move probably did have an impact on their other targets in January. Certainly, someone such as Bruno Guimaraes would have surely found it much more difficult to justify joining Newcastle if he was in line to be their first addition of the window.

But Trippier was confident in taking that step. And he is now reaping the rewards. Newcastle are moving in the right direction as a club. And he has been completely vindicated for opting to join the Magpies when he did.
