Simon Jordan delivers brutal message to Brendan Rodgers after Celtic’s Champions League exit

The fallout of Celtic’s Champions League exit continues as Simon Jordan puts his tuppence worth into why Brendan Rodgers’ side failed to qualify from Group E.

Whilst the radio pundit agrees that Celtic need to invest more into the squad, Jordan took aim at Rodgers with a harsh message that will not go down well in Paradise.

Jordan said [talkSPORT], “Give us more money is what he’s saying and if you’re spending £20m a season and you’re selling £30m of players, if you want to be more successful in Europe, I would say, ‘Be a better coach!’.

“But notwithstanding that, be a better coach and at the same time be given a little bit more ammunition perhaps.

“Because two coaches, one that’s at this moment in time has slightly gone off the boil but one that everyone loves, Ange, produced the same rubbish outcome.”

Whilst I agree with Jordan’s summation that Rodgers needs help from the Celtic board, I cannot agree that the Celtic manager must simply become ‘a better coach’.

Manchester United and Newcastle’s results are no better than Celtic’s

That’s just a ridiculous argument. Teams like Manchester United and Newcastle are struggling in the Champions League despite United spending almost £1b in ten years and Newcastle spending over £440m since their takeover in 2021.

Do Erik Ten Hag and Eddie Howe now need to become better coaches as well? It really is a lazy argument to put forward when you are so used to seeing millions being squandered in the English Premier League without a minute’s thought or care for the consequences.

Celtic’s transfer net spend this season is circa £10m. Manchester United spend over double that per week simply in player wages. [SalarySport]

Balance and perspective are required when assessing Scottish team’s performances in Europe because I guarantee you one thing, give all the English Premier League teams the same budget as Celtic and their performances and results would drop off a cliff.
