Simon Grayson believes Leeds United could sign Sergio Romero if promoted

Former Leeds United manager and player Simon Grayson has been discussing potential goalkeeper transfer options for the club this summer, amid rumours surrounding the future of Kiko Casilla.

Casilla is the club’s biggest-earner and struggled with his firm at points this season. He was then handed a suspension for racially abusing Jonathan Leko and it has led to speculation that the Spanish cap could be on his way out.

Grayson, who started his career at Leeds and spent over three years as manager at Elland Road, helping the club out of League One in 2010, has now suggested to the Daily Star a big name potential replacement would be keen.

Sergio Romero, who currently acts as back-up to David De Gea at rivals Manchester United was suggested by Grayson as a potential replacement for Casilla.

It is clear that the ex-Leeds man believes Bielsa and the prospect of playing at Elland Road should Leeds win promotion is enough to lure such talents.

“If Leeds get back to the Premier League, playing for the club is an exciting prospect for anybody.

“They’ll be attracting players from all other globe – regardless of whether they’re Argentinian or playing for Manchester United.

“Getting in front of the Elland Road faithful and working for Bielsa is a massive proposition. It won’t be an issue attracting players.”

Romero would, of course, be a brilliant signing, if Leeds did win promotion and look for a new stopper.

Leeds fans would have seen first-hand his high-performance level when facing Manchester United in a pre-season friendly last summer.

Of course, the 96-cap international would also have an immediate link with Bielsa given his Argentine nationality.

There would be some major issues. Romero still has a year left on his United contract and, as reported by the Daily Mail, earns around £70,000-a-week at Old Trafford. That is double Casilla’s reported £35k-a-week club-high wages at Elland Road.

But should Leeds win promotion to the Premier League, the one-time World Cup finalist would certainly be an attractive proposition.
