David Silva scored another stunning free-kick for Manchester City on Wednesday night as Pep Guardiola’s men earned a narrow 2-1 win over Bournemouth – and Simon Donnelly has urged him to join Celtic.
Silva, 34, is set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season on a free transfer – with his £220,000-a-week deal (Spotrac) expiring initially at the end of June, but has since been extended to complete the current campaign.
The former Valencia ace has been in stunning form for City since the restart, scoring three goals and creating three more in seven Premier League outings. The Spaniard has had a hand in 16 goals, during his 26 league games.
A World Cup winner with Spain, Silva now has 432 appearances in all competitions for City. He is regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever attacking midfielders, and Donnelly wants him at Celtic for “a couple of seasons”.
TBR’s view – Celtic have no chance of signing Silva
As much as he would be a sensational signing for Celtic – as he would for most clubs – Silva is expected to go and finish his career in the MLS, China, the Middle East or another country capable of offering him a final pay cheque.
His current wages could be even increased should he move to one of the aforementioned countries. At Celtic, they would struggle to avoid a quarter of what he is currently earning.
Yes, he would be a stunning signing for Celtic – one of the best in the club’s history. But they simply would not be able to afford him and while Donnelly is dreaming of Silva in green and white, it is purely just a dream.
