Reported Liverpool target Timo Werner was in action on Saturday as his RB Leipzig side played out a 1-1 draw with Freiburg.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have been heavily linked with the Germany international, who has been in superb form this season, netting 27 goals and registering 12 assists.
The Bundesliga returned after a two-month pause due to the global health crisis, all teams playing behind closed doors.
The lengthy break meant most of the players were understandably not in peak match fitness but Werner nonetheless put in a decent performance.
He created five chances, had two shots on target and was unlucky not to grab an assist for his side, which had to come from behind against the visitors.
While Leipzig had 17 shots, seven of which were on target, they could only score once, while Freiburg had three shots, only one of which was on target – the game’s opening goal.
Manuel Gulde’s 34th minute opener came against the run of play, and the Red Bulls had to wait until 13 minutes from time before Yussuf Poulsen grabbed their equaliser.
There was late VAR-related drama too, as Robin Koch slotted home what seemed to be a 93rd-minute winner, only for VAR to rule there had been an offside in the build-up.
What did fans make of Werner’s performance? Here is some of the social media reaction:
Werner is similar to Mo Salah. Constant threat, creates chances and openings with runs… think he’s more clinical though! #LFC do it.

Liverpool have to get Werner. It’s a disgrace if they don’t. He fits the club like a glove, is proven, young and cheap. It’s necessary for the club to stay at the top – not someone to replace Salah, Mané or Firmino – someone to compete with the 3 of them.

Timo Werner comfortably Leipzig’s best player. Has played all 3 front 3 positions today .

Our front 3 get’s in a 1 v 1 situation literally every game, Werner is a much better finisher than Firmino hands down. Liverpool front 3 needs some reinvention, I’d love to try out Firmino behind Werner and take work load off wingers. He would get 20 goals easy in England.
